Students were tasked with designing a functional line of mugs and bowls to complement and contrast the recent Boone Tavern Crafted installation.
While designing, we thought about the saturated colors and strong craft forms that are now present in Crafted, the Boone Tavern restaurant. Students were also influenced by the natural beauty of the Tavern’s surrounding fields, forests and hills.
If the golden-brown pots evoke the fall season, our black clay/blue glazed pots tell the story of winter in the Bluegrass, with the shortening of days and hibernation of plants and trees. Akin to snow and frost covering Appalachian hills at midnight, the delicacy of the dark clay pot is blanketed under a glittering layer of a blue glaze with tantalizing hints of white and green.
As we continue to design the extended Crafted line, we consider the Eighth Great Commitment of Berea College, specifically its appreciation of the Appalachian region and its people.
