The Student Craft Outreach program began in 2012 to extend Berea’s commitment to craft beyond the College, bringing art and craft education into schools. Student Craft Outreach and its nine students inspire thousands of Appalachian children each year with the goal of nurturing the region’s culture of craft. The program also offers a Teacher Empowerment Program that provides professional development and support to teachers and enables further extension of the program’s reach.
All of these services, and the materials necessary for all projects, are provided by generous philanthropic support at no cost to the schools.
Craft Outreach students design the programs offered, connecting the curriculum with Berea’s Great Commitments. Director Steve Davis-Rosenbaum provides opportunities and responsibilities for Outreach students to learn skills essential for them beyond their current craft experience.
