Labor, mental and manual, has dignity as well as utility. Women have always been associated with the kitchen as domestic workers, devoting themselves to the nourishment of their family while fulfilling societal roles. The seemingly insignificant tasks of cleaning one’s home and cooking delicious meals can bring so much joy and beauty to our lives. Though undervalued in our society, there is incredible dignity in housework, and these thoughtfully handcrafted napkins and tea towels celebrate these tasks. These home goods are a tribute to my mother and her unwavering dedication to her seven children. I view my mother as the cross which not only keeps the individual diamond structures in the cloth intact but can also be traced across the entire area of the textile. The colors chosen are from the curtains in my family’s kitchen.
