Beginning in 1920, Ceramics experienced a number of starts and stops as a program during its first 50 years. This changed in 1970, when Professor of Ceramics Walter Hyleck founded the Ceramic Apprenticeship Program, and students were encouraged to make significant contributions to designs produced. Sharing his duties between the Art Department and Student Craft contributed, Hyleck said, to an education-first
environment committed to “teach[ing] students to learn to love something.” That focus continues today: Fifteen Ceramics students design and make, all under the supervision of Director Philip Wiggs ’91, who encourages students to connect with Berea’s values through ceramics. The Ceramics studio is built on a foundation of teamwork that respects each student’s individual artistic perspective.
Objects created by our Ceramics students will be made available here at noon on the second Friday of every month. Items are limited-edition creations and usually sell out quickly. Because our focus is education and not production, you may have to wait until next month’s drop to make a purchase. Please know we will continue to do all we can to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity to support our students through the purchase of a Student Craft item.
